Maternal mortality in the United States has more than doubled over the past four decades, a reversal that no strong and prosperous nation should accept. Over the same period, every comparable high-income nation has driven its maternal mortality rate downward, while the United States stands alone among industrialized countries moving in the opposite direction—compounded by an infant mortality rate that is roughly twice that of peer nations. Today, America’s moms face a greater risk of dying from pregnancy and childbirth than their mothers, and even grandmothers, did generations ago.
